CREECA offers a certificate in Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies (REECAS).

Undergraduate Certificate in Russian, East European or Central Asian Studies

The Certificate can be a valuable addition to a major in History, Slavic Languages and Literature, Economics, Political Science or another department. Students must fulfill the requirements for an established major in the College of Letters & Science, the Business School, the School of Education, or another college or school in the university and then complete seven courses in the area, including at least one from each of four core clusters. Although language study is strongly advised, there is no language requirement and language courses do not count toward the certificate.

Requirements for the Undergraduate Certificate in REECAS

To receive the Certificate candidates must:
    • Fulfill the requirements for a B.S. or B.A. degree in an established major in a school or college of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
    • Maintain a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 in all courses taken for the Certificate.
    • Complete a Certificate declaration form at CREECA office, 210 Ingraham Hall.
    • Successfully complete seven courses for the certificate: one interdisciplinary course (Group I), three courses in History and the Social Sciences representing at least two different departments (Group II), and three courses in literature and the arts (Group III).

Students are encouraged to consult with the certificate advisor and declare the certificate as early as possible in their college careers in order to select an academically focused group of courses. Courses with an asterisk [*] beside them are special topics courses that may be used for the certificate when the topic relates to Russia, Eastern Europe, or Central Asia. The Certificate Advisor will assist in identifying other applicable or newly established courses taught by new and visiting faculty. Certificate courses may not be taken pass-fail.

While not formally required, students are strongly recommended to take at least two years of a Slavic, East European, or Central Asian Language.
