Scholarship application deadline.
General application deadline.

We are accepting applications from students wishing to take intensive elementary or intermediate Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, or Uzbek in summer 2013.  If you are interested in taking a Central Eurasian language not on this list, please contact the CESSI Program Coordinator.

Tuition and Fees

The cost of the CESSI 2013 8-week program is $3,500.*  This includes the cost of UW-Madison assessments for use of campus facilities (student services, recreational facilities, etc.). The fee does not include the cost of textbooks or living

*Exception: UW-Madison undergraduates who are classified as resident or Minnesota reciprocity for tuition purposes follow regular UW-Madison summer 2013 fee schedules.

Housing, Books, Incidentals

The cost of required textbooks will vary between the different languages offered at CESSI, but students should plan to spend roughly $150.00 for textbooks. Summer housing and food costs can vary greatly in the Madison campus area, but a frugal student could safely budget $1800.00 for housing and meal costs for the summer.

Please see our Housing page for more information on housing options in Madison for summer 2013, and also the Financial Aid section below for additional funding opportunities at CESSI.

Financial Aid

It is our goal to make CESSI as affordable as possible. CESSI offers two funding options for applicants.

1. CESSI FLAS - Graduate students (all levels) and undergraduate students (intermediate- and advanced-level Central Eurasian languages only) whose home institution is eligible to award FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) summer fellowships are encouraged to apply first to their home institution. A limited number of FLAS awards may be available for UW-Madison and special students for CESSI 2013.

Applications for summer 2013 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships will be due in mid-February. For information on the FLAS fellowship, please visit flas.wisc.edu.

2. CESSI Fee Remission (Scholarship) - Available to all applicants. Pending confirmation of funding, we anticipate being able to award several fee remissions to qualified applicants.

3. External Grants - More information coming soon.

In addition to these funding options, we encourage both undergraduate and graduate students to consult with their home department and home university's office of financial aid for any funding they might offer.
