Housing Options in Madison


There are a number of housing options available to BALSSI students, including on-campus dormitory rooms, privately owned dormitory rooms and privately owned apartment rentals. Each offers a different mix of convenience, affordability and flexibility. There are only a limited number of on-campus dorm rooms, but there are usually plenty of off-campus apartment rooms for sublease.


On-campus housing

On-campus dormitory housing in Merit House and Susan B. Davis House are dormitories that will be completely reserved for students taking classes for academic credit. They will be available to BALSSI participants for summer on a first come, first served basis through the University Residence Halls. Room rates range from approximately $830 to $1050. More information and an application form can be downloaded at the University Residence Hall Web site. University Residence Halls do not offer meal plans, but do have a number of cafeterias and coffee houses that residents may use at a lower price than non-residents. Residence Hall dining rooms operate more like restaurants with a la carte pricing for a wide selection of food. Susan B. Davis and Merit House do offer shared cooking facilities in each building. You will need to bring your own pots, pans, and other cooking utensils.


Privately owned dormitory rooms

Private residence halls are residence hall (dormitory) living arrangements that are owned and operated by the private sector. Application procedures and lease agreements are solely the responsibility of the student renter, not the University. Many include a meal plan. For information on private residence halls in Madison, write or call the halls directly. Applications are not available through the mail from CREECA or the UW-Madison Campus Information and Visitor Center. Privately owned apartment rentals

The UW-Madison Campus Assistance and Visitor Center has a convenient search engine where you can search for off-campus rental housing (sublets). The Web site has online listings of privately owned apartments, houses and rooms for sub-lease, as well as consumer rental information. For further information, call the Campus Assistance Center at (608) 263-2400. There are also various other Web sites unaffiliated with the university where you can search for sublets such as BadgerSublets or Madison Craigslist. Please be aware that parking on campus is extremely limited and that most students who live off-campus either walk, bike or bus to campus.
